Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about LinkCAD licensing, installation and usage.

Licensing

How do I install the network license?

The LinkCAD network license consists of two components: a shared network folder on a server, and a network license file "lclic.net" on each client computer. Setup steps:

  1. Create a shared network folder on your central server (e.g. "\\CENTRAL-SERVER\LINKCAD").
  2. Give the shared folder Full Control (READ, WRITE, CREATE, DELETE) for all users running LinkCAD.
  3. Verify permissions by creating and deleting a test file from a client computer using a normal user account.
  4. Email the full share path to [email protected] to receive your license file.
  5. Download and install LinkCAD on all client computers.
  6. Copy the "lclic.net" file to the LinkCAD program folder on each client.
  7. Verify by checking Help > About LinkCAD — licensed options should show "NET" status.

Can the floating network license be accessed by remote clients?

LinkCAD's floating network license allows up to 3 (Network Lite) or 30 (Full Network) users to run LinkCAD simultaneously. All computers must be on the same network. Remote clients connected through a VPN can use LinkCAD as long as the shared network folder is reachable.

How do I transfer the single user license to another computer?

  1. Install LinkCAD on the target computer (same version recommended).
  2. On the target computer, open Help > About LinkCAD and note the serial number.
  3. On your current computer, paste that serial number into the "Transfer License" field in the About dialog.
  4. Click "Transfer" and use the displayed registration code to register LinkCAD on the target computer.

Conversion

Why is the converted file too large or too small?

If converting from or to DXF, the DXF units in the Import/Export Options dialog are probably wrong. DXF files are unitless — a distance of 10 units may mean 10 microns, 10 inches, or 10 meters. Make sure you specify the correct meaning of DXF units (e.g. select microns if 1 unit = 1 micron). This does not limit resolution because DXF supports fractional units.

How does LinkCAD locate fonts?

LinkCAD supports SHX font format (also used by AutoCAD). Fonts are located in this order:

  1. LinkCAD's Program Folder
  2. Folders listed under Tools > Options > Fonts
  3. Font folders of AutoCAD / VoloView (if installed)
If not found, it defaults to the font in Options > Fonts, and as a last resort uses the built-in TXT font. You can also use a font map file named "lcad.fmp" in the program folder.

How do I create filled areas?

Unlike AutoCAD, LinkCAD always fills all closed polygons — no hatching needed. If your areas are enclosed by separate line segments instead of a single polyline, use the "Repair Open Polygons" dialog that appears when you open the file. The first repair option joins separate lines into a single closed polyline.
